On the latest movies nite, I
watched a splendid French movie, titled Le
Premier Jour du reste de ta vie, or The First Day of the Rest of Your Life.
It was released in 2008 and has gained Cesar Award in France as Best Editing
and nominated as Best Film.
It’s a dark yet funny movie. The
main themes of this movie is telling about five key days in the life of a five
person family that change the rest of their life. The two sons, Albert and
Rapheal, the daughter Fleur, mother Marie-Jeanne and father Robert, make up the
Duval family. They are dysfunctional, yet they always watch out for each other
and stick together. The story is told in five parts, each one showing an
important moment in each person’s life. While the film is a drama, there are
also many very funny moments.
Although the main setting is
based upon the family relation, but this movies is not purely about family
things, it talks about finding identity, questioning on existence and some absurd
thoughts and ideas.
Duval’s family is a middle class
in French living 1980-2000. At initial movies they were a happy closed family.
A problem starts to emerge when all the children’s getting older and want to start
their own life, beside the parents touch their midlife crisis as well.
This is a deep but enjoyable
movie. It shows the hardships and the highlights and get totally immersed in
the family and their circumstances. This is the movie that I surely watch
again.
